What is Lucid Dreaming?

A lucid dream is any dream during sleep in which you become aware that you’re dreaming. It’s an incredible moment. Imagine waking up as you have done thousands of times before. But instead of being in your bedroom or wherever you sleep. You’re still in a dream environment conscious and aware of your surroundings.

If you were talking to a dream character and you suddenly become Lucid. You could turn that character into something else like a frog or make the character disappear, just by thinking about it. If you’re nice, you could give the character a big hug and thank them for entertaining you. You are now in control of your dream narrative.

When you become a Lucid dreamer, you take the control of your subconscious mind.

With this empowerment, you can have a very satisfying experience.
The laws of physics don’t apply. Once you have mastered Lucid dreaming your dream world is your oyster.

You could explore dream environments or change them completely. Fulfil your desires, fly, walk through walls, have dream sex, make people levitate or disappear.

You could use the Lucid dream platform to attempt Astral projection.

My experience of Lucid Dreaming and explaining the concept to others

I’ve had hundreds of Lucid dreams, and I know why. Lucid dreaming for me was a very welcomed side effect of Astral Projection training, also known as trying to have an out of body experience. See About for more on all that.

I have however struggled to explain Lucid dreams to the curious. Just the other day, my beautiful wife who I share my deepest secrets with again asked me what a Lucid dream is?

Disappointed but always eager to talk about Lucid dreaming. I again attempted to explain the concept of Lucid dreaming. I began with, in its purest form, a Lucid dream starts life just like any other dream. But the difference is, it develops from your so-called standard set of random thoughts into something extraordinary.

Flying pink elephants and a cheerful pig

Let’s imagine you go to sleep as you usually do and at some point, during the night you have a dream. Now in the realm of wild imagination, I’m going to speculate that this dream includes you flying way above the clouds on the back of a pink elephant. You’re having the time of your life, and you look to your right, and you see a flying pig who cheerfully looks your way. The pig gives you a smile before continuing on his journey in the opposite direction.

The sun is shining, and you haven’t a care in the world. This scenario is, of course, a dream. A random collection of thoughts that have accumulated together to form some narrative. Influenced perhaps by past hours, days, weeks or months events.

Now imagine your back on that pink elephant having the time of your life. Then suddenly you realise you’re dreaming. Imagine what your face would look like as it suddenly dawns on you the realisation that this isn’t real. This is a dream, and you know it is a dream. From this point onward you have a level of control over what you do next. If it is a powerful Lucid dream, then at this moment you could impact the dream in any way you see fit.

The flying pig is smiling at you. You could respond by turning it into a flying frog by just thinking it. You could convert the pink elephant into a plane or change the entire landscape from the sky and clouds to grass and hills only by thinking about it. The critical distinction here is your awake in the dream environment. Your body is fast asleep, but your consciousness is awake. This phenomenon baffles science and perhaps gives us some insight into what we are beyond our flesh and bone.
